Upamanyu Chatterjee

Upamanyu Chatterjee (b. 1959) was born in Patna and studied English literature in Delhi University before joining the Indian Administrative Service.Photograph of Upamanyu Chatterjee

His novels focus on the life of a young, westernized Indian bureaucrat posted in a non-descript town. His writing is characterized by a wry sense of humour and an eye for portraying the life of middle-class India.

Upamanyu Chatterjee has not yet achieved the success his debut novel promised as some of his contemporaries have, through Western publishers.
