Timeri N. Murari
Timeri N. Murari (b. 1942) grew up in Madras. In 1959, he moved to London to study engineering but found his calling in writing.
In 1963, after studying at a university in Montreal and freelancing for The Guardian, Murari joined a newspaper, in Kingston, Ontario, as a reporter. When he was fired because of racial prejudice, he moved to London and joined The Guardian. In the 70s, he moved to New York.
He has written a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction, set across the world and peopled with international characters, reflecting his own broad experience. He has also written and produced the film The Square Circle (Daayra in Hindi, directed by Amol Palekar).
In 2002, Timeri N. Murari was given the R.K. Narayan Award for his novels and for his work in cinema and theatre. He returned to India in 1988, and now lives in his ancestral house in Chennai with his Australian wife.
