Sunetra Gupta
Sunetra Gupta (b. 1965) was born in Calcutta and spent her childhood in Africa (Ethiopia and Zambia). She has a degree in biology and is a Reader in Oxford University.
Her prose stands out for its style. The narration, usually in the present tense, is in long winding sentences (which, thankfully, seldom run out of breath) that branch out and envelope the reader in their tendrils. The movement of the plot is mainly through the characters' reminiscences—at least one critic has used the adjective Proustian while alluding to her writing.
Sunetra Gupta won the Sahitya Akademi award and the Southern Arts Literature Prize. She lives in Oxford.
