Ramabai Espinet

Ramabai Espinet (b. 1948) is an Indo-Carribean-Canadian writer born in Trinidad. She grew up there, until her family migrated to Canada in the 1960’s.

Ramabai Espinet attended York University in Toronto. She was first established in the literary scene as a poet, then as a children’s writer, before her first novel The Swinging Bridge was shortlisted for the Regional Commonwealth Writers Prize. She writes mostly from the perspective of a culturally displaced woman trying to balance the ideas of identity and home.

She currently teaches English and Caribbean Studies at York University and Seneca College.
